Krita

Krita is an open source digital drawing software similar to photoshop that I’ve used for several years and have intermediate expertise in.

My goal was to create a short quick start video under 2:30 min that would show a new user the basic features of the software.

I am relatively inexperienced in video production and editing, so there was a learning curve to apply my knowledge about graphic design to video. I watched video tutorials on using Camtasia and referencing other similar videos to create my video which I wanted to be engaging, upbeat, and colorful which is reflective of the Krita users as artists. I used many visual effects to highlight information and demonstrate a basic workflow for new users.

The final video is a brief but broad overview of Krita’s user interface which will help brand new users start drawing with the software.

The existing Krita quick start guide is a fully digital set of HTML pages.

My goal was to convert that content into a beginner-friendly PDF guide which consolidates the essential information into a document that could be read chronologically or by section.

I used the existing Quick Start Guide content and did light reorganization and editing. Then, I created a layout grid in InDesign, took custom screenshots, and placed the content using basic principles of design. Because Krita is a software for artists, I wasn’t afraid to use different layouts that added visual interest which created a more engaging reading experience.

My Quick Start Guide is a visually engaging experience that contains a mix of conceptual content to explain digital drawing overall as well as some procedural content which shows software-specific features.
